Starting the Journey: Monyash to Ricklow Quarry
Our adventure began in Monyash, a charming village that marks the start of a rugged yet rewarding route through Lathkill Dale. The walk from this end is more challenging, but it provides access to one of the most exciting fossil-hunting locations in the UK: Ricklow Quarry. This abandoned quarry is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and home to an astonishing number of Gigantoproductus fossils, the largest brachiopods ever recorded.

These marine creatures lived over 340 million years ago when this area was covered by a warm, tropical sea. The northern faces of the quarry contain countless fossils stacked on top of each other, preserving a moment in prehistoric time. Alongside these, crinoid stems, corals, and other marine fossils can be found embedded in the limestone, offering a glimpse into an ancient seabed.

Through Lathkill Dale: Limestone Cliffs and Hidden Caves
After exploring the quarry, we continued along the dale, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and rugged terrain. The valley, part of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve, is home to a variety of wildlife, including peregrine falcons, dippers, and the rare Jacob’s Ladder flower, which blooms in summer.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Lathkill Dale is its unique river system. The River Lathkill is a winterbourne stream, meaning it disappears underground during dry months and resurfaces in wetter conditions. This makes for a constantly changing landscape, where sections of the valley remain dry before the water emerges further downstream.

Lathkill Head Cave: The River’s Hidden Source
Our route led us to Lathkill Head Cave, where the river resurges from the limestone after flowing underground. In wet conditions, water gushes directly from the cave, forming deep pools and cascading down the valley. However, in drier months, the riverbed remains empty until further downstream. The sight of this cave, set against the dramatic rock formations, is a highlight of the walk.

Returning Soon for More Exploration
Although this time we focused on fossil hunting and the natural beauty of the dale, there’s still much more to explore. Further down the valley lie the remains of Bateman’s House and the historic lead mines, which played a crucial role in Derbyshire’s industrial past. These mining sites date back to the 13th century, with remnants of old engine houses and aqueducts telling the story of a once-thriving industry. We plan to return soon to uncover more of this fascinating history.

Plan Your Visit to Lathkill Dale
Lathkill Dale is an incredible destination for anyone interested in fossils, history, or simply enjoying a walk through one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Peak District. While the route from Monyash is more challenging, an easier approach is available from Over Haddon, making it accessible to a wider range of walkers.
Whether you're searching for ancient marine fossils, discovering hidden caves, or simply taking in the scenery, Lathkill Dale never disappoints. We can’t wait to return and explore the other half of this stunning dale.
